The 2013 ASHE annual conference is upon us, and HERI is excited to announce that more than a dozen papers and sessions at the conference will present findings from analyses of CIRP data. Seven of these studies are being presented by HERI staff members or affiliated scholars; the remaining six studies have been conducted by researchers who were granted access to data through HERI’s data access process.

These presentations cover a diverse set of topics: three focus on faculty issues; three examine STEM student experiences; and two examine issues of student mobility and retention.

A few of the highlights include:

UCLA graduate student Bryce Hughes and HERI Director Dr. Sylvia Hurtado present findings from a national longitudinal study of STEM students. This specific paper examines the experiences of undergraduate engineering students. (Thursday, November 14, 1 – 2:15 p.m., Regency F).

UCLA professor and HERI faculty affiliate Dr. Linda Sax and UCLA doctoral student Kate Lehman lead a presidential session focused on data visualization. Linda and Kate will present findings from their national study on trends in students pursuing STEM majors using innovative software to illustrate how students have changed across more than 40 years of CIRP Freshman Survey data. (Thursday, November 14, 4 – 5:15 p.m., Regency B).

Adriana Ruiz, a HERI graduate student researcher, presents on issues of Latina/o college student mobility. Using 2004 CIRP Freshman Survey data and National Student Clearinghouse data, Adriana looks at predictors of transfer, stopout, and dropout. (Friday, November 15, 10:30 – 11:45 a.m.).

HERI Assistant Director for Research Dr. Kevin Eagan presents with his co-author Christos Korgan on findings from the 2010-2011 Faculty Survey that address the differences in faculty’s use of student-centered teaching methods across faculty appointment types (e.g., part-time, full-time tenure-ineligible, full-time tenure track). (Friday, November 15, 3:15 – 4:30 p.m., Grand B).
